Answering Questions

What would make my electrical bill go up suddenly?

Electrical rates are based on kilowatt hours. This is 1000 watt-hours or ten 100 watt light bulbs burning for 1 hour. Electrical rates can vary based on time of year, time of day or a higher Kwh rate once you have reached a certain consumption level. In addition, as equipment ages, the consumption of electrical energy will increase, resulting in a higher energy bill. This is the same action that an automobile will go through as it ages, miles per gallon will improve as it matures. This is due to wear of the parts. We can compare actual consumption with manufactures rating and determine if the equipment is using excessive energy.

Why does my breaker keep turning off and/or why do my lights flicker?

Flickering lights and circuit breaker stripping are a warning sign and indication that there is a loose connection somewhere on the circuit.

My electrical range and/or dryer do not get hot, do I need to get new appliances?

Have the circuit checked out by a qualified electrical contractor before you invest in a new appliance and continue to have the same problem. Ranges and dryers typically require 220-240volt of energy to operate correctly. By not getting hot, this is a sign of low voltage. The source of the problem could be in the appliance, a point of connection on the circuit or in the panel.

What is the danger of aluminum wire?

The flow of electricity generates heat thereby causing the aluminum wire to expand and contract. As this action takes place, connections loosen resulting in even more heat. The aluminum wire needs periodic maintenance to preserve the integrity and safety of the circuit. The connections must be tightened and devices replaced if heat has created an unsafe or high energy consumption condition.
